Jellyfish July

In our series of essays about the remarkable ecology of Hong Kong, we chart the research into the remarkable biodiversity of Hong Kong by the city's scientists.

One of the sea creatures that is a crucial part of that biodiversity is the jellyfish. However, historically, Hong Kong's jellyfish research is limited, with most records dating from the 1980s and 1990s. The territory's tropical location near highly biodiverse waters suggests its jellyfish diversity is probably underestimated.

This series of posts aims to inspire awareness about jellyfish varieties and their crucial role in the seas around us. Starting in July – Jellyfish July – we’ll be featuring one species per month for the following year.

This unique project will feature expert text and commentary by John Terenzini, founder of the Hong Kong Jellyfish Project, as well as beautiful line drawings by Anthony Calvert and sumptuous watercolours by Jennifer Bernstein. We hope it will not only whet your appetite to know more about these fascinating creatures but also lead to greater appreciation of their beauty and grace.
